Cuchulainn Cycling Club celebrates 90 years in 2025

It’s a big year for Cuchulainn CC in 2025 as it celebrates 90 years since it was formed in 1935. Taken from the annals….

“1935 was a momentous year as it saw the formation of the Cuchulainn Athletic and Cycling Club. A meeting was held in the Forrester’s Hall on March 16th, where Peter Finnegan was elected as the first secretary of the club. The name was chosen to pay homage to the great Celtic Warrior Cuchulainn. The first club outing for cyclists was organised and they met at Roden Place with twenty five members present.”

From its earliest days the club has had great success from founding member and secretary, Jack McCann and Racing Captain Paddy Faulkner regularly stepping up on the podium. Within two years a Cuchulainn team was to win the Irish 10 mile Time Trial Championship – it’s first national honour. Fast forward to 2024 and club member Johnny McCabe stepped on another podium this time as M60 World Cyclocross Champion which he followed up with a 4th place finish in the 2025 edition of the championship.

But the club isn’t just about its racing section, Cuchulainn has built a membership of over 200 many of whom are leisure members and was voted best leisure club in Ireland on more than one occasion. Each June it runs its Tour of Louth Sportive event with two distance options 50km and 112km and then in August it offers a women’s only the Sarah Fagan Women’s Lap of Louth which has two distance options also (50km and 90km).

There is an off-road section for those who want to get into mountain biking or cyclocross and with their own league events during the Summer while its racing section runs a race league midweek evenings also during the Summer and the renowned Traders Cup.

Much has changed since the early days of cycling in the county, but what hasn’t changed is the enjoyment of taking to the roads under your own power and spending time in the outdoors of this great county.

For those interested starting cycling the club offers a Couch to 50Km programme each year starting on 1st April in Kilcurry Community Resource Centre at 7:30pm let by Philip Kerley.
